What is it?
Vitamin B7 (Biotin) Blood Test
Vitamin B7, also known as biotin, is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin essential for energy metabolism and the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. It also supports the synthesis of fatty acids, amino acids, and glucose, playing a key role in maintaining healthy skin, hair, nails, and nervous system function.
A deficiency in biotin can lead to symptoms such as hair loss, brittle nails, skin rashes, fatigue, low mood, and, in severe cases, neurological issues.
This test measures your biotin levels to help detect any deficiency early, enabling you to take steps to restore balance and protect your overall health and wellbeing.
Is It For Me?
If you’re not sure exactly what you need, we advise all our clients to consult with a GP or one of our Registered Nutritionists before taking any blood tests. However, below you can find more information about this panel, and we hope it will help.
IS THE VITAMIN B7 (BIOTIN) BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?
Testing your biotin levels is recommended if you have symptoms that may indicate a deficiency, such as unexplained hair loss, skin rashes, or neurological changes. Certain groups — including those with inherited metabolic disorders, long-term parenteral nutrition, or on specific medications like anticonvulsants — may also benefit from regular monitoring.
Why Have the Vitamin B7 (Biotin) Blood Test?
Measuring your biotin levels helps ensure this vital nutrient is within optimal range, supporting energy metabolism, healthy skin, hair, and nails, and enabling better management of related health conditions.

Doctors notes
DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS
While biotin deficiency is relatively rare, excessive intake from supplements can interfere with certain laboratory tests, leading to incorrect diagnoses.
For example, high biotin levels can affect tests for thyroid function, hormone levels, and cardiac biomarkers.
Monitoring biotin levels ensures that supplementation is necessary and maintained at a safe level.

FAQS
Who should be concerned about biotin deficiency?
Biotin deficiency is relatively rare, but certain groups are at higher risk. These include individuals with genetic disorders like biotinidase deficiency, those on long-term parenteral nutrition, people taking certain anticonvulsant medications, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic alcohol use.
These groups may benefit from regular monitoring of biotin levels to prevent deficiency.
What symptoms might indicate a biotin deficiency?
Signs of biotin deficiency can include hair loss, skin rashes (especially around the eyes, nose, and mouth), brittle nails, fatigue, depression, neurological symptoms (such as numbness and tingling in the extremities), and conjunctivitis.
If you experience any of these symptoms, it's advisable to consult a healthcare provider and consider testing for biotin levels.
How does biotin supplementation interfere with lab tests?
Yes, high levels of biotin from supplements can interfere with various lab tests, including those measuring thyroid hormones, troponin (a cardiac marker), and other hormones. This interference can lead to false results, potentially causing misdiagnosis or inappropriate treatment.
If you are taking biotin supplements, inform your healthcare provider before undergoing lab tests.
Can I see a GP to discuss my Results?
Yes, usually the same or next day.
Our fantastic partner clinical team of consultants and GPs. Once you have your results, you can book an online video consultation to discuss your results.
Our clinical team consists of practicing NHS and private GPs, who work closely with our laboratory and can tell you what your blood test results mean for you. Having an integrated laboratory and GP services makes your health journey seamless and extremely efficient.
This service is not included in the price of the test, it is charged separately, should you wish to book it.
Will I have a general explanation of my results?
Yes, our doctors put a huge amount of effort into your online Health Dashboard, which will have explanations of what each biomarker is, the normal reference ranges and what it means if you are outside of them.

"Recently, I had a blood test for hormones and was absolutely impressed with the service. Upon arrival, I was immediately offered water, and the studio was bright, beautiful, and Instagram-worthy. The specialist greeted me, helped me fill out the form, answered my questions, and reassured me that everything would be quick and painless — and it truly was! The atmosphere felt more like a spa than a medical procedure. Just a few days later, I received detailed results for each test and was offered a consultation with a doctor to review and explain them. I love how the service supports you from start to finish. The staff were attentive, friendly, and caring. Highly recommend!"
