Abdominal Pain Blood Test
CQC-registered / UKAS-Accredited / 24 Clinique's / 30 Biomarkers
What is it?
Abdominal Pain Blood Test
Persistent abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, or diarrhoea can be distressing and disruptive. Our Abdominal Pain Blood Test is designed to help uncover the root causes of these symptoms, giving you the clarity you need to take the right next steps for your health.
This comprehensive panel includes a full blood count (FBC) to detect or exclude anaemia, assess immune health, and identify conditions such as coeliac disease, pernicious anaemia, or internal bleeding. We also measure iron, vitamin B12, and folate — key nutrients that can affect digestion and energy.
Kidney function tests evaluate waste filtration, electrolyte balance, and blood pressure regulation, while liver enzyme analysis helps identify liver or gallbladder issues that may cause pain, swelling, or changes in digestion. C-reactive protein (CRP) is also measured to detect inflammation from infections or inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
With precise biomarker analysis, rapid results from our UK CQC-accredited lab, and the option for at-home testing, this test provides the essential insights you need for effective diagnosis and symptom relief.
Is It For Me?
If you’re not sure exactly what you need, we advise all our clients to consult with a GP or one of our Registered Nutritionists before taking any blood tests. However, below you can find more information about this panel, and we hope it will help.

Is the Abdominal Pain Blood Test Right for You?
This test is ideal if you experience persistent or unexplained abdominal symptoms such as pain, bloating, constipation, or diarrhoea — especially if they’ve been labelled as ‘IBS’ without a clear cause.
It’s also valuable if you have a family history of digestive conditions such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, or coeliac disease, or if you’re concerned about inflammatory bowel disease in general.
Additionally, this test can help assess the health of your liver and kidneys, providing a broader view of your digestive and overall wellbeing.

Before Your Test
Take this test after any symptoms of a short-term illness have settled. If you take biotin supplements, stop taking these for 72 hours before the test.
You need to be eating a diet containing gluten for 6 weeks before this test.
There is a larger failure rate for some biomarkers in capillary testing (hemolysis etc). For platelets (PLT) measurement we recommend a walk-in venous sample.
Clinic appointment - how to prepare for the Abdominal Pain Blood Test
If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:
- Read the instructions in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS section
- Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
- Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
- That’s it! We’ll do the rest.
Home test kit - how it works with the Abdominal Pain Blood Test
Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.
The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!
- Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
- Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
- Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
- Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
- Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.
We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

HOME KIT EXCLUSIONS AND INFORMATION
We always recommend in Clinique appointment when the time permits. Less common Full Blood Count Markers (marked with *symbol) are not reported in Capillary/Home kit samples due to their instability. If you are undergoing a particular FBC investigation and need these specific markers for your GP, we advise you to come to one of our clinics for a venous sample. We routinely report these markers in venous samples.
Platelets Count (PLT) in home kits is usually reported, providing the blood has no clots.
Potassium is only reported in the venous version of this test, due to instability in unspun blood.
TURNAROUND TIME
We are extremely fast, with some results available within hours and others within a working day or less, from the time your sample is in our lab. However, this is not a guarantee and should not be taken as such. This is the guideline turnaround time that can be shorter or longer.
THIS IS NOT A GUARANTEED TURNAROUND TIME.
We are extremely proud of our very short turnaround times and very efficient laboratory processes; you will receive your results as soon as they are available and have completed clinical validation.
Whilst we accommodate the shortest time scales, with some results available within hours, for some tests the turnaround time is 1-3 working days.
Doctors notes
DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS
The Abdominal Symptoms Test is specifically tailored for individuals experiencing frequent diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal discomfort, and bloating. It aims to delve into symptoms often associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a condition characterised by common yet distressing signs like diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, and crampy abdominal pains.
Given that there's no definitive test for IBS, this comprehensive test is designed to rule out other possible causes of these symptoms, including ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and liver or kidney disease, ensuring a thorough evaluation and aiding in the accurate identification of the underlying issue.
Red flag symptoms for the Abdominal Pain Blood Test
Even if your blood tests are normal, you should see a doctor if you have any of the symptoms below because they may be a sign of serious underlying illness.
- Bleeding when you open your bowels
- Unexplained weight loss
- Progressively worsening abdominal pain
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes

"Recently, I had a blood test for hormones and was absolutely impressed with the service. Upon arrival, I was immediately offered water, and the studio was bright, beautiful, and Instagram-worthy. The specialist greeted me, helped me fill out the form, answered my questions, and reassured me that everything would be quick and painless — and it truly was! The atmosphere felt more like a spa than a medical procedure. Just a few days later, I received detailed results for each test and was offered a consultation with a doctor to review and explain them. I love how the service supports you from start to finish. The staff were attentive, friendly, and caring. Highly recommend!"
